Hi friends,
As it turns out, I am a hope hound (not an actual breed of dog). It's more of a human thing where you root around looking for beautiful outcomes or beginnings. This helps counter the heaviness that can sometimes be found in everyday life. And the seemingly endless logistics of whatever you are facing. Is anyone else feeling like modern life is largely an admin job? Let’s challenge that by finding some buoyant moments (while still filling out approximately 13 forms and responding to 47 emails).
Here's a few things sparking hope for me right now:
I am excited about having this wholehearted conversation with journalist Steven Petrow at Comma, a bookshop in Linden Hills, Minneapolis at 5:30pm on Sunday, September 22nd. Join us! Petrow’s new book, The Joy You Make, is about finding joy amidst grief, which is both fascinating and relevant. The event is free, just like joy. Invite a friend or come solo. Either way, you’re showing up for joy.
Regardless of whether you will be in the Twin Cities this weekend, The Joy You Make is definitely hope inducing—I loved it. It is accessible, vulnerable, and full of practical, fresh ideas.

Also, my effervescent friend and fellow memoirist Jennifer Cramer-Miller and I are teaching an in-person essay writing class together at ModernWell in Minneapolis on Wednesdays from 11:30-1pm. Who is up for creative exploration? How about something new this fall? I know we will draft, revise, support each other, and probably discover surprising things about writing/being alive. And have some fun while we're at it.
And no matter where you are, please join me and New York Times bestselling author Jasmine Guillory on Tuesday, September 24th at 7pm central time (8pm ET) for a free virtual author event co-hosted with Carver County Library. Libraries and rom-com queen Jasmine Guillory: both hopeful forces in this world. We will be talking about her latest book, “Drunk on Love.” Let’s get this romance novel party started—and you don’t even have to leave your house.
Whatever you are doing this fall, I wish you hope, joy, and ample time to read. Plus auto formatting on those seemingly endless forms.
Let's do this,
Emma

Autumn is a time of hope for me. The heat and bugs of summer have passed. The trees fill with vibrant colors. The sky alights with birds. The holidays are around the corner.
Is the writing class free? Thanks, Pamela
